Keeping your phone cool during long sessions

June 13, 2026 · Lena Hoffmann

Heat is the quiet enemy of mobile gaming. A phone that runs hot throttles performance, drains faster and gets uncomfortable to hold, and yet most people never touch the settings that cause it. A few changes go a long way.

The biggest lever is the framerate cap. Dropping from an uncapped high setting to a steady 30 or 60 often removes most of the heat without you noticing the difference in play. I do this on nearly every graphically heavy title.

Turning off unnecessary effects helps too. Bloom, reflections and dynamic shadows look nice in screenshots but they push the chip hard. In something like a fast racer I'd rather have a cool phone and readable track.

Finally, take the case off for long sessions and keep the brightness sane. None of this is dramatic, but stacked together it's the difference between a phone that lasts and one that begs to be plugged in.
